Introduction

There is legislation to protect many historic buildings/places but little to protect ancient lanes/byways. West Manley Lane is an example of Tiverton's Rural Heritage and you can read something of its history on the Historical Interest Page.

If you have any information, anecdotes or memories of this area we would be pleased to receive them and add them to our collection.

Increasingly walkers, cyclists and horse riders are using the lane and there are suggested walks with things to look out for on the Leisure Activities Page.

Extract from Devon Wildlife Consultants_Hedgerow Assessment Report 2009 (see under Reports and Documents page)

The hedgerows of West Manley Lane are afforded protection under the Hedgerow Regulations 1997... this importance relates to the botanical diversity of woody species and the association of protected and / or rare species of animals.

Tiverton Grand Canal and its environs with its walking and cycling leisure opportunities is of great importance giving pleasure to locals and tourists as well as providing biodiversity and economic benefits for the local community.
